eBike Regulations Have Arrived

On May 1, 2024 Utah State Bill HB 85 went into effect. This is one of the many state bills that will regulate the sale of electric vehicles that are beyond that Class 1, 2, and 3 specifications, as well as lightweight-electric motorcycles.

One of the most interesting and positive moves by the state is the requirement of labeling electric vehicles that have the ability to go above 20 MPH on motor power alone, have motor power greater than 750 watts, or have footpegs instead of pedals:

"THIS VEHICLE IS NOT AN "ELECTRIC ASSISTED BICYCLE" AS DEFINED BY UTAH MOTOR VEHICLE CODE AND IS INSTEAD A TYPE OF MOTOR VEHICLE AND SUBJECT TO APPLICABLE MOTOR VEHICLE LAWS IF USED ON PUBLIC ROADS OR PUBLIC LANDS. YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES MAY NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THE USE OF THIS VEHICLE..."

More states are introducing bills now to restrict and regulate ebike use and out-of-class electric vehicles. Are your products and companies ready?
